Over the past couple of years, the Kenyan government has been struggling to pay back its loans to China, chief among them being loans taken out to construct the Standard Gauge Railway, or SGR. Some economists have suggested that Kenya should lease ownership of the SRG to China. This would entail full control of operations and freedom to repatriate all revenue generated by the line, up until a point where the revenue generated matches the initial loan amount given by China to construct the railway.
